6 Ways to Bust Through Creative Block – Today! |

Creative block – we’ve all been there. The cursor is blinking on a blank page and the ideas just aren’t coming. You have everything you need to start that new creative project but the inspiration just isn’t flowing. The good news is, there are lots of tips, tricks and strategies you can try to unleash your creative potential. Here are 6 ways to help your best ideas come bubbling to the surface today!

Start the Clock!

There’s something about working against the clock that busts through creative block and starts the ideas flowing. Set a stopwatch and challenge yourself to come up with as many ideas as possible in a limited amount of time. Try not to analyse or think too logically at this point, as that can come later. As the clock ticks, just let your creativity flow. As well as jotting down your thoughts in words, you might like to try to think visually, and doodle and draw some suggestions too.

Walk and Talk

Another way to get around creative block, is to give yourself a new perspective on a situation by physically moving away from your desk. If you have a one-on-one meeting in the diary, you could turn it into a ‘walk-and-talk’ discussion instead. You might just be surprised at how easily thoughts flow when you’re away from the office in the fresh air, enjoying uninterrupted time away from your inbox and phone. Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg and Barack Obama are reportedly fans of taking their meetings outside – so if it works for them, it’s definitely worth a try!

Get the Creative Juices Flowing with Orange

Orange is the colour of the sacral chakra (located just below the navel) which is the centre of our creativity. Using this enlivening colour in areas of the home or office where you need to be creative can give you the extra confidence to express yourself well. Burn orange essential oil, treat yourself to a bunch of orange flowers or simply wear some orange clothing. By introducing a splash of orange, you might just get through that creative block and even experience a whole new zest for life!

Calm with Carnelian

The carnelian is an orange to reddish-brown crystal which resonates with the sacral chakra and is believed to help awaken creativity. Placing one of these in your office, study space or anywhere where you will see it often can help give you motivation and courage to explore new ideas. You may even discover a talent you didn’t even know you had!

Laugh Through Creative Block!

It’s often said that laughter is the best medicine, and when it comes to creativity that’s certainly true. A good laugh reduces stress and gets those feel-good endorphins flowing. When we learn to loosen up a little and don’t take life too seriously, that’s often when exciting new ideas are triggered. If you’re stuck in a creative rut, phone a friend who always makes you laugh, watch a funny YouTube video or play an ice-breaker game at your next group meeting at work to inspire creative thinking.

Let the Ideas Come to You

Do you find that some of your best ideas come to you when you’re not really thinking about them? Like when you’re in the shower, or just as you’re falling asleep? It’s as if when the mind is free from wandering thoughts, that’s when those wonderful light-bulb moments of clarity and inspiration pop into our heads. Some people find that a good way around creative block is by using meditation and mindfulness techniques to help quieten the mind and provide the calm space needed to approach creativity from a new perspective. If you’d like to learn more about how this might work for you, we offer courses in both Mindfulness and Meditation.
