Baphomet: Myths, Symbols, & Links to Satanism

Baphomet is surrounded by myth, misunderstanding, and dramatic imagery. For some, it looks like a demonic goat or a devil’s goat, while for others, it represents balance and spiritual freedom. 

Because it appears so frequently in discussions about Satanism, witchcraft, and alternative belief systems, separating fact from fiction can be insightful – especially if you want to understand whether the image is meant to be evil, or something else entirely. Let’s explore Baphomet’s origins, its changing meanings, and the truth behind the myths.

Before the famous goat pentagram or the modern sigil of Baphomet existed, the word “Baphomet” appeared in medieval France during the persecution of the Knights Templar in the early 1300s. Some Templars were accused of worshipping a mysterious idol called Baphomet. Historians widely agree that this was likely a misunderstanding or perhaps a forced confession.

The original Baphomet meaning had nothing to do with the goat-headed figure people recognise today. Instead, it was a vague name used in accusations that were politically charged. Over time, the word evolved, picking up new interpretations as different writers and occult thinkers reimagined what it might represent.

The version you see today, the half-human, half-goat figure with wings, a torch, and symbolic gestures, comes from the 19th-century French occultist Éliphas Lévi. His drawing, published in 1856, is the foundation of the modern Baphomet head and the reason so many people associate Baphomet with occult symbolism.

Éliphas Lévi created what is now known as the Baphomet goat, often described today as the goat of Mendes, although this term is inspired more by scribes and occult writers than by historical Egyptian religion. Lévi didn’t intend his Baphomet to be a great demon or a literal creature. Instead, he designed it as a symbolic figure of balance:

The figure’s right arm points upward, while the left points downward, reflecting the idea of harmony between opposites. This posture is sometimes referred to as the Baphomet salute, although it’s not something used in mainstream pagan or occult practice.

The sigil of Baphomet, which shows the goat’s head inside an inverted pentagram, is now the official symbol of the Church of Satan. This association has led many to believe that the Baphomet goat itself has always been a Satanic symbol  – but history doesn’t support that idea.

The goat pentagram design became linked with Satanism only in the 20th century, especially when Anton LaVey adopted it in the 1960s. LaVey’s version includes the Hebrew letters spelling “Leviathan” around the outside. While the Church of Satan treats it as a sign of independence, personal power, and rejection of traditional religious control, this meaning is modern.

Because the goat pentagram is strongly tied to Satanism today, Baphomet is often assumed to be a demon or devil. But to answer the questions that many people naturally have:

No ancient religion or mythology includes a demon named Baphomet. The image comes from Lévi’s artwork, not ancient demonology.

The answer depends on the belief system. In Lévi’s work, Baphomet isn’t good or bad – it’s purely symbolic. In modern Satanism, it represents freedom and self-determination, while to some Christians, the image is interpreted negatively because of the goat-like appearance. The meaning shifts depending on cultural perspective, not due to any ancient story.

Nothing. The Bible doesn’t mention Baphomet at all.

Even if you don’t follow any of the belief systems mentioned above, you may be curious about the deeper Baphomet symbolism. Here are some of the key themes associated with the image:

Some people encounter the image and immediately associate it with sin because of cultural portrayals of goats as demonic, or references to the “scapegoat” in the Bible. However, Baphomet is not listed as sinful in any scripture. The idea that Baphomet is the “icon of sin” comes mostly from modern interpretations, horror films, and misunderstandings about occult symbolism.

People sometimes ask this after encountering the image during meditation or dreams. Seeing the image doesn’t imply anything supernatural. If it appears in a dream, the meaning depends entirely on personal symbolism, so perhaps balance, curiosity, or the unknown. If you encountered it in daily life, it may simply reflect how common the image has become in mainstream culture.

In mythology, Baphomet isn’t a character with powers. However, in symbolic terms, people sometimes describe the image as powerful because it represents themes that resonate with them, like strength, balance, independence, and transformation. This is a subjective meaning, not a supernatural one.

Because Baphomet is symbolic rather than a deity, there is no mythology about it ruling over a realm or domain. Some occult writers link the figure to personal transformation or spiritual balance, but this is metaphorical, not mythological.

A Baphomet tattoo is often chosen for symbolic reasons:

It’s not typically chosen to express a belief in demons. Many people are drawn to the imagery because it’s bold, mythic, and rich with symbolism.

Lévi added them to represent feminine energy and completion. The figure also has a torch between its horns, symbolising enlightenment and inner illumination. The intention wasn’t to shock but to illustrate a spiritual balance of dualities.

Lévi did not design Baphomet as evil. Instead, he created a symbolic image expressing unity and knowledge.

In most modern witchcraft traditions, including Wicca, Baphomet is not a god, spirit, or entity that is worshipped. Wicca focuses on the God and Goddess, not a goat god figure.

Most pagan traditions do not include Baphomet at all. Some occult practitioners use the image symbolically, not as a deity.

Outside of symbolic use by the Church of Satan, there is no major religious group that worships Baphomet as a literal being.
