What is Sea Witchcraft?

Sea witchcraft is a mystical and nature-based spiritual practice that draws its inspiration from the ocean, water, and the natural elements that are found along the coastline. Sea witches are individuals who have a deep connection with the sea and its energies, and they use this connection to practice magic, cast spells, and perform rituals.

A fundamental aspect of sea witchcraft is the relationship between sea witches and the natural elements: especially water. Sea witches believe in the interconnectedness of all life and see themselves as stewards of the seas and oceans.

In different cultures, sea witches have been known by various names, such as selkies in Celtic mythology, water wights in Scandinavian folklore, or brujas del mar in Latin American traditions. These traditions often include stories of sea witches who possessed the ability to control the weather, navigate treacherous waters, or heal using their knowledge of herbs and the sea.

Historically, they were thought of as protectors of sailors and fishermen, as they were believed to have the power to influence the sea and its moods. However, in recent times sea witchcraft has grown in popularity, with practitioners adapting the practice to their own beliefs and needs.

Elemental Magic of the Sea

As mentioned above, there is a large emphasis on the elements, which are meant to represent different aspects of life, magic, and the natural world. By harnessing the elements, sea witches can manifest their intentions and create a connection with the sea.

Water

Water is the primary element that sea witches work with. They believe in the transformative power of the sea, which symbolises both life and death. Sea witches often collect seawater, shells, or other items from the coast to use in their spells and rituals. For example, they may collect a vial of seawater during the full moon, infusing it with intentions of emotional healing and cleansing. This "blessed" water can then be used for purification rituals or to anoint objects. Water is also associated with emotions, intuition, purification, and cleansing, and it helps sea witches to navigate their feelings and understand their emotions with more clarity.

Earth

Earth is associated with stability, strength, and fertility, and sea witches draw on the Earth's stability and grounding qualities to connect with the physical world. Sand, rocks, driftwood, and seaweed can be found in many coastal regions. Sea witches use these materials to craft talismans so they can create protective barriers and grounding energy during their rituals. For example, they might build a small sand altar on the beach and use this space to meditate or communicate with the ocean spirits.

Air

Air represents communication, inspiration, and the movement of energy. The coastal breeze and the sounds of the sea are thought to carry messages to the universe, and sea witches often call upon the winds and air to assist in their spells, sometimes by sending energy to their intended recipients. One way in which they may communicate is by writing their intentions on a piece of paper and letting the wind carry it out to sea.

Fire

Although it’s not directly associated with the sea, fire is a symbol of the sun’s energy, which influences the ocean’s tides and cycles. Sea witches may also use fire symbolism to represent the sun's energy in their rituals, sometimes during celestial events like the solstice or equinox, where they gather driftwood and seaweed to create a beach bonfire.

Sea Witch Spells for Beginners

If you’re new to sea witchcraft, you’ll need to build a strong foundation with the elements. Before you attempt to cast any spells, take some time to reflect on your intentions. Sea witchcraft is all about aligning your will with the energies of the sea and the elements, so you’ll need to think about what it is you hope to achieve or manifest with your magic. Secondly, you’ll need to gather some tools - nothing too elaborate; you can start with a few simple items. For example, you can collect a small bowl of seawater, a seashell, and some beach sand to connect you with the sea. You’ll also need to create a sacred space to do your rituals. Ideally, you want to choose a quiet, natural place that’s either near the sea or another water source. Then arrange the items you gathered to create a small altar.

Now you’re ready to cast some spells. Below, we’ve listed a few straightforward sea witch spells and rituals that are perfect for beginners.

Sea Blessing Ritual

  • Begin by standing on the shore with your feet in the water.
  • Take a moment to ground yourself and connect with the energy of the sea.
  • Hold your seashell and visualise your intentions for healing.
  • Out loud, speak your intentions, and then sprinkle a few drops of seawater over your head.
  • Allow the sea to cleanse your spirit.

Protection Amulet Spell

  • Find a small natural item (like a smooth pebble or a sea shell).
  • Hold the item in your hand and close your eyes.
  • Visualise a protective barrier forming around you.
  • Verbally state what it is you desire - protection or security.
  • Keep the item with you as a protective amulet.

Sea Meditation

  • Find a quiet place near the sea or the shore.
  • Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
  • Listen to the sound of the waves and feel the rhythm of the sea as the waves hit the shore.
  • As you meditate, visualise the sea’s energy washing over you, cleansing you, and filling you with life.

As a sea witch, it’s important to maintain a deep respect for the natural environment. When practicing these spells, make sure that you dispose of any materials responsibly and only use objects that you find naturally on the shore or in the water - avoid using small living creatures or plants and minerals.

Aside from that, these rituals don’t have to be followed exactly, so feel free to tailor them to your specific intentions and adapt them so that they resonate with your personal connection to the sea. As you practice these spells and become more experienced in sea witchcraft, you can start developing more complex and personalised rituals and spells.

Incorporating Sea Witchcraft Into Your Life

What’s wonderful about sea witchcraft is that you can easily incorporate it into your daily life even if you don’t live close to the shore.

Here are a few things you can do in your everyday routine:

  1. Morning Sea Connection

Begin your day with a connection to the sea or water element. Where possible, spend a few moments near a water source (like a river or ocean), or simply hold a bowl of water. Feel the energy of the water and set your intentions for the day.

  1. Sea-infused Baths

You can infuse your bath water with sea salt, herbs, or essential oils that are associated with the sea. As you bathe, visualise the water cleansing your spirit.

  1. Seashell and Crystal Jewellery

You can stay connected to the sea’s energy throughout the day by keeping a talisman on you. This could take the form of jewellery that incorporates sea shells, or crystals that are associated with sea witchcraft.

  1. Daily Affirmations

Create daily affirmations and speak them aloud to yourself to align your intentions with the power of the sea.

  1. Visualisation

Even if you’re not near the ocean, you can close your eyes and visualise the waves, the scent of the seawater, and the feel of the ocean breeze. Practicing this can strengthen your mental connection to the water element.

  1. Beachcombing

Whenever you are at the beach (even on holiday) you can spend some time beachcombing and collecting stones and seashells. This activity will connect you to the ocean and you’ll even have some more items for your rituals!
