The Nutrition For Kids Course teaches learners aged 7-14 about following a balanced diet. It covers all of the major nutrients in detail, explaining in simple, easy-to-understand terms how each one helps the body, why we need it and what happens if we don’t get enough of each nutrient.
This course teaches you about macronutrients and the role they play in fuelling the body, giving us energy to play, learn and grow. It also covers the importance of micronutrients and how they ‘unlock’ the macronutrients in the body.
We’ll look at exercise, the role it plays in healthy eating, and activities you may like to get involved in. Special diets are also briefly covered and the course offers exercises and activities to help the learning ‘stick’.
Practical cooking exercises are included, so you will need access to a kitchen, plus some equipment and ingredients. All the recipes are child-friendly and can be made (with adult supervision) by most children.
You will be encouraged to reflect on how eating certain foods makes you feel and to keep a food journal – reviewing it regularly as you learn to identify healthy choices and plan balanced meals.
The course concludes by guiding you through planning a week’s worth of healthy meals in a menu-planning exercise.
The course does not discuss weight loss or calorie counting—instead, it focuses on food as fuel. It is based on current nutritional guidelines for children aged 1-18 and includes information on portion sizes, food labelling and hydration.
