The Secret Life of Trees Diploma Course begins by exploring the vital role trees play in sustaining life on Earth, their benefits to humans, and their importance within our communities and environment.
You’ll journey through the history and evolution of trees, from the earliest “true trees” to the diverse species we know today. Gain an understanding of the differences between trees and shrubs, and discover some of the planet’s oldest living trees.
Trees have held special significance to humans across cultures and centuries. The course examines the meanings, mythologies, and religious associations attributed to trees, including iconic symbols like the World Tree and the Tree of Life, as well as sacred groves.
You’ll also explore how trees have influenced the development of nations, including the impact of the UK’s 1217 Charter of the Forest and the role of trees during the world wars. The course highlights major global reforestation projects underway today.
Moving from human perspectives to the trees themselves, you’ll learn about scientific and cultural views on how trees sense and respond to their environment. This includes how trees “communicate” through underground networks and their seasonal patterns, including sleep-like cycles.
The course covers the concept of tree gender, explaining how male and female traits manifest in trees and the fluid nature of tree sexuality.
You will be introduced to traditional uses of trees in herbal preparations. This includes guidance on harvesting parts of trees for teas and poultices that have historically been used to support wellbeing. It’s important to note that this course is for educational purposes only and does not provide medical advice or clinical training.
In addition, the course explores ways to connect with trees for mental and emotional wellbeing. You’ll learn about meditation techniques inspired by Taoist traditions, the practice of forest bathing, and other cultural approaches to fostering a deeper relationship with trees.
