What Will You Learn?

This online dementia awareness course focuses on knowledge and practical strategies to help you feel more confident in providing compassionate support. With 9 self-paced modules, you’ll learn at your own speed and return to the materials whenever you need them.

What is Dementia?

The course begins by introducing what dementia is and how it can affect memory, communication, mood, and daily living. You’ll explore the different ways dementia is described, how it may present in everyday life, and why awareness matters for people and their families.

Recognising Signs and Challenges

While diagnosis and treatment are clinical matters, having an awareness of the signs of dementia can help you understand behaviours and challenges you might see. You’ll explore:

  • Common ways dementia may show up in day-to-day life.

  • How dementia can affect relationships and routines.

  • Why everyone’s experience of dementia is different.

Caring and Communicating with Compassion

Caring for someone with dementia isn’t only about meeting physical needs; it’s also about maintaining dignity and respect. This section of the course explores:

  • Person-centred approaches to care and why they matter.

  • Tips for adapting communication so conversations remain meaningful.

  • The role of patience, empathy, and inclusivity in supporting wellbeing.

Creating Safer and More Supportive Spaces

You’ll learn practical ideas for supporting someone in their environment and daily life. This includes thinking about home safety, making spaces easier to navigate, bringing in additional care if needed, and understanding how small changes can reduce stress. You’ll also explore how activities for dementia can promote social interaction and a sense of belonging.

Navigating Behaviours and Building Support

This course on dementia also discusses behaviours that may sometimes feel challenging, helping you understand why they might occur and how to respond with calm and compassion. You’ll learn how important it is to look after yourself as a caregiver and where to find wider support networks when you need them.

Upon completion of the course, you'll receive a certification that you can use to document your learning and as a stepping stone towards further accredited study.

Please note that audio courses do not include certification.
