Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of talking therapy. It’s used to help people understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours interlink and influence each other, both positively and negatively. The goal of CBT is to help people turn this understanding into an approach that allows them to better manage some of the problems they face in life.

This online CBT course introduces the core principles of cognitive behavioural therapy, seeking to boost self-awareness, emotional resilience, and constructive thinking. This course will help you to learn to recognise any unhelpful thought patterns that lead to negative cycles, and to discover how a shift in mindset can improve your personal wellbeing.

What Will You Learn?

Perhaps you’re passionate about supporting others, or are exploring a new path in wellness or coaching? Maybe you’re trying to develop your understanding of mental health? No matter what your interest in CBT is, this extensive course will be of great value to you.

This CPD-accredited CBT course begins with the history of cognitive psychology and behavioural psychology. From here, you will go on to familiarise yourself with psychological theories of emotions. You'll learn about how feelings are experienced on a physiological level, and you’ll see how the way we experience emotions is influenced by our thought processes and behaviour.

As you study, you’ll find a 3-module focus on counselling skills. If you aspire to ultimately work as a counsellor, then you will need to not only understand the techniques used, but also what the job entails. This course outlines the personal and counselling-specific skills that are needed to embody this role. It goes over the counselling process itself, and the professional and ethical constraints. It also digs into how to look after your personal mental and emotional well-being.

To further deepen your understanding of counselling, you will explore the history of psychology. This will provide a greater understanding of human feelings, abilities, and personalities. You'll study developmental psychology, psychotherapy, and humanism. Armed with the knowledge of the theories behind counselling, you will be guided through the principles of CBT to see how it can be used to challenge negative thought patterns and install new, positive behaviours.

Additionally, there are 2 modules each on CBT techniques and variant approaches like dialectical behaviour and solution-focused therapy. Throughout 5 modules, you’ll also explore some of the most common life situations that can lead someone to consider CBT. We’ll lift the lid on depression, anxiety, phobias, insomnia, and anger management, walking you through their common symptoms and how cognitive behavioural therapy can offer relief. Although this is a knowledge-based CPD course and does not qualify you to practise as a cognitive behavioural therapist, it provides a comprehensive insight into CBT for personal and professional development as part of your Continuing Professional Development.

In addition to written materials, the course features 4 educational videos presented by a qualified CBT practitioner.

  • Introduction to CBT
  • Client Considerations
  • Client Consultation
  • End of the Session

These videos explore the structure of CBT-informed conversations and considerations in a practical sense, giving you some sense of how you’d use them within a supportive role.

The course also includes 2 case study examples. These allow you to reflect on hypothetical (but very plausible) scenarios and apply CBT concepts in a theoretical, non-clinical context.

By the end of this course, you will have explored:

  • The foundations of counselling and psychotherapy theory.
  • Core concepts and frameworks.
  • Basic CBT-inspired tools for reflection and self-awareness.
  • Variations and adaptations of CBT.
  • The process of change and mindset shifts.
  • Professional boundaries and considerations.
  • An overview of how CBT principles relate to common emotional challenges.

Certificates

Upon successful completion of the course, you will have the option of printing your CPD accredited certificate.

Who Would Benefit from This Course?

This comprehensive course aims to support you as you’re introduced to the core skills and concepts used in CBT, helping you to grow in knowledge and confidence.

You’ll examine how CBT principles can be applied to better understand and manage obstacles like low mood, anxiety, and anger, allowing you to gain personal insight or to support others in a non-clinical context.

If you're already working in a supportive, caring, or coaching role, this course will contribute toward your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and can be a meaningful step in your learning journey.

Please note: This is a knowledge-based CPD course and does not qualify you to practise as a cognitive behavioural therapist. It is intended as an ideal introduction for those considering further training, and will help you make an informed decision about whether this field is for you. If you're interested in pursuing a professional career in CBT, we recommend undertaking accredited clinical training and gaining hands-on experience under appropriate supervision.
