In this introduction to zoopharmacognosy, you’ll learn about the history of animal observation, key figures in this scientific field, and explore the potential applications of zoopharmacognosy observations.
You’ll study the active constituents within plants that animals may select and how animals use their senses to identify these plants. The course discusses distinctions between food consumption and the use of plants for therapeutic purposes, including how animals may tolerate certain toxic compounds. You’ll also explore phenomena such as geophagy (soil-eating) as a natural response to toxins.
The course also covers plant compounds that animals may use to support their natural defenses, strategies to avoid parasites, and topical applications like natural insect repellents. Psychotropic plants and theories about their use by animals are also considered.
Alongside theory, you’ll learn about the practice of applied zoopharmacognosy, including an overview of relevant legal and safety considerations. This course discusses situations where natural remedies may be used to support animal wellbeing, focusing on herbs, essential oils, and other natural substances organized by body system, as well as behavioural support.
You will also explore approaches for applying zoopharmacognosy principles with pets such as cats, dogs, and horses, enhancing your understanding of natural remedy options and application methods.
Please note: This CPD course is for educational purposes only and does not provide veterinary training or qualifications. It does not replace professional veterinary advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always consult a qualified veterinarian for animal health concerns.
