What Will You Learn?

Below you'll find a full breakdown of what's covered, what you'll walk away knowing and who this course is designed for. Whether you're a counsellor, coach or simply curious about this approach, there's something here for you.

The Foundations and History of Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy didn't emerge from a vacuum, and understanding where it came from makes the theory far more useful in practice. This section of the course grounds you in what the approach actually is, its present-moment focus, its humanistic roots and what genuinely sets it apart from other talking therapies

You'll also get a clear account of how it came to be, from Fritz and Laura Perls and Paul Goodman to the founding 1951 text, the split between the East Coast and West Coast traditions, and the relational turn that shapes how most gestalt therapists work today.

Understanding that history matters, because the caricature of gestalt therapy as theatrical and confrontational is still out there. You'll come away knowing why that picture's incomplete.

Core Theory: Awareness, Contact and the Cycle of Experience

The heart of gestalt therapy is awareness: the idea that becoming fully conscious of what you're doing, feeling and avoiding creates the conditions for genuine change. You'll explore how this plays out through concepts like the here and now, the awareness continuum, organismic self-regulation and the principle of figure and ground. You'll also work through the cycle of experience, gestalt therapy's map of how a need rises, gets attended to and resolves, and what happens when that cycle's interrupted. Core topics include:

  • Contact, the contact boundary and why genuine meeting matters
  • The seven stages of the cycle of experience
  • Unfinished business and why incomplete experiences stay active
  • The fertile void and the paradoxical theory of change
  • Anxiety as excitement without the support to carry it through

Disturbances to Contact: Understanding How We Get in Our Own Way

One of gestalt therapy's most practically useful contributions is its account of how people characteristically interrupt their own contact with the world. Crucially, these aren't framed as flaws or pathologies; they're understood as creative adjustments that once made sense and have simply outlasted the problems they solved. You'll learn introjection, projection, retroflection, deflection and confluence, how each one shows up in real life, and what distinguishes healthy use from a pattern that's become a cage.

This section's genuinely illuminating whether you're interested in gestalt counselling as a practitioner or want to understand your own habits a little better.

Gestalt Therapy Techniques and Experiments

Gestalt therapy is known for its inventive, experiential methods, and this course gives you a solid grounding in how they work and why. You'll learn what distinguishes a gestalt "experiment" from a standard therapeutic technique, the principles behind working phenomenologically, and the skills that separate a thoughtful experiment from a theatrical trick. Techniques and approaches covered include:

  • Empty-chair work for resolving unfinished business
  • Two-chair work for internal conflict and the top dog/underdog split
  • Gestalt dream work: treating the dream as an existential message
  • Exaggeration, amplification and staying with discomfort
  • Language experiments and working with the body as a full participant

You'll also get an honest account of what the research supports, including where chair work has the strongest evidence and where the evidence base is still developing.

The Therapeutic Relationship, Applications and the Modern Landscape

For most contemporary gestalt therapists, the relationship between therapist and client isn't just the backdrop to the real work; it's the heart of it. This section covers Buber's I-Thou encounter, the four qualities of genuine dialogic presence (inclusion, presence, confirmation and commitment to dialogue), and the paradoxical theory of change, one of the most elegant and practically useful ideas in all of psychotherapy. You'll also look at how gestalt therapy's applied in practice: individual sessions, groups, couples work, organisations and coaching, finishing with a balanced appraisal of the approach's strengths, limitations and place in the field today.

Once you've completed the course and received your certificate, you'll have a well-rounded understanding of gestalt therapy that holds up under scrutiny.

Please note: certification is not available for audio courses.
