The course begins by exploring the bonds that humans have forged with animals, and how the breaking of those bonds is comparable to losing a human family member. You’ll explore:

• The stages of grief and how they may present in the context of pet loss.

Understanding Pet Loss and Grief

You will study the topic of grief in detail, including a breakdown of the 7 stages of grief. This will provide a thorough understanding of the process and how its effects are no different whether the loss is a human or an animal. You’ll gain an educational understanding of:

• Common grief responses after the death of a pet.
• How to offer supportive listening and emotional presence during early bereavement.
• Why pet loss may be especially difficult when the animal was a primary emotional companion.

Support Strategies & Communication Approaches
