What Will You Learn?

Museums have existed for longer than some of the artefacts they house. The Museum Studies Diploma Course provides a broad understanding of museums and museum studies. We'll examine their changing uses, ethics, curation and exhibition methods, and career opportunities.

The earliest museum for which we have evidence opened in 530 BCE. We'll begin the Museum Studies Diploma Course by examining what has and has not changed since. We'll also look at museum buildings as artefacts in their own right. Learn about the form and function of these great spaces.

The Museum Studies Diploma Course explores the role of colonialism in acquiring collections. We'll consider the ethics involved and the topics of restitution and repatriation.

We'll explore material culture, the presentation of oral histories, and museum curation. We'll also examine the digital conservation methods used to preserve artefacts at risk of degradation.

The Museum Studies Diploma Course considers more than history. We'll look at museums specialising in science and how their curation differs from others.

Exhibitions are one of the ways that museums share artefacts around the world. We'll examine the development and advertisement of exhibitions. We'll also explore museum careers and the skills required to undertake these roles.

By studying this course, you will learn about:

  • Museum history
  • Museum architecture
  • The changing ethical considerations of museums
  • The importance of material culture
  • Oral history collection, curation, and presentation
  • Display curation and management
  • Technology as a preservation tool
  • Science and technology museum curation
