What Will You Learn?

Jane Austen is one of the best-known novelists of all time. Writing during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, her work critiqued and commented upon the landed gentry, and in particular, the plight of single women within this social class.

Famed for their wit and wonderful use of irony, Austen’s novels are as easy to consume today as they were in her own time – becoming a phenomenon that’s seen them translated into over 30 languages, continuously in print, and with countless societies formed to celebrate the author.

With both written and video elements, this course explores Jane Austen’s work, life, and why she continues to be popular today.

Your introduction to one of the world’s most renowned novelists, Jane Austen. Not only a deep exploration of the six famous novels penned by the writer, this course examines what makes them so special and why they receive such critical acclaim. You’ll learn about the various styles that Austen incorporated within her writing and the themes she dealt with in her work.

Going further, we’ll explore Austen’s life and the influences on her work, including Austen’s family and the various cities and homes that she lived in. The course also addresses her death and what happened to her work after she had died.

By studying this course, you will:

  • Explore Jane Austen’s early life and the juvenilia she produced
  • Learn how her style and incorporation of important themes within her work developed
  • Examine the plots of Austen’s six famous novels and her earlier, lesser-known work
  • Discover how she pioneered the revolutionary use of free indirect speech in Emma
  • Understand how Austen’s popularity grew and what pushed it forward in the 20th century
  • Gain access to three videos to further progress your knowledge
