The course begins with the basics of genetics, as you learn about the role of genes and what gametes, zygotes, haploids and diploids are. You’ll be introduced to nucleic acids (i.e. DNA and RNA), which make up genes, how DNA can replicate itself as well as produce RNA and proteins, and further your understanding of the genetic code.
We’ll discover the location of genes and the theory of chromosomal inheritance, become familiar with the observations of Boveri-Sutton and the experiments and laws of the ‘father of genetics’, Gregor Mendel, as well as the exceptions to these laws.
The Genetics Diploma Course looks at extra-nuclear DNA and its mode of inheritance, why studying metabolism is also an important part of genetics, and mutations, including mutagens and cancer-causing substances.
