British Sign Language

As well as understanding the practical aspects of vocabulary and grammar, this course also gives you a more thorough grounding. It covers additional topics like the origins of British Sign Language, how it is used (not solely as a form of communication for the hearing and speech impaired), and the grammatical structure of British Sign Language (called the Topic Comment Structure) and how it differs from its spoken counterpart.

Throughout 11 modules, you’ll learn BSL online via visual demonstrations of the signs discussed. This CPD-accredited British Sign Language course is accompanied by video tutorials that you’ll gain access to upon enrolling. The following topics are taught in the videos:

• Letters and Numbers.
• Personality and Feelings.
• Basics, Objects, and Places.
• Food and Drink.
• Date, Time, and Weather. Occupations.

Near the beginning of the course, in module 2, you’ll be given a variety of tools to effectively learn British Sign Language, including guidance to make a study and practice schedule. At the end of each module, there’ll also be an opportunity to test your knowledge of BSL and assess yourself. The conclusion of module 11 (the final part of the diploma) also takes the time to consider the next steps for your learning journey, giving you a wealth of valuable advice.

The BSL diploma takes anyone who wishes to learn British sign language from a complete novice, to having a good understanding of British sign language and being capable of using it in basic, everyday conversation. It will give you a good foundation of knowledge to then go on to further study.

The course can also help you if you work with the public or in carer roles, where you may be more likely to come in contact with BSL users. Likewise, it can help you if you are considering a career in British Sign Language Interpretation but would like to understand the topic further before committing to a more financially and time-demanding sign language qualification.
