What Will You Learn?

Knowing what to do in an emergency can be the difference between life and death. The Feline First Aid Diploma Course will guide you through the basics of identifying and responding to common ailments in cats.

You will understand your cat better than ever - discovering feline evolution, ecology and domestication before moving on to a brief overview of the major anatomical features and physiological systems of cats.

Cats are adept at hiding injury and illness - you will gain awareness of the behavioural signs to look for that may indicate an ailment. The course also explores the typical situations in which cats find themselves that can lead to emergencies, what can be done to prevent them, and how to prepare for an emergency so you may act quickly and calmly should a situation arise.

The course will take you through several emergencies and what should be done in each to provide immediate treatment and comfort until veterinary assistance can be sought. The emergencies covered include: bleeding, broken bones, burns or scalds, poisoning, seizures, bites and stings, and choking.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Summarise the biology and behaviour of domestic cats and discuss how they relate to emergency and first aid situations.
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify common ailments in domestic cats.
  • Critically examine emergencies and determine the appropriate action to address the issue until a veterinarian can be reached.
  • Formulate a plan for proactively addressing and responding to emergencies.
